Unique Logistics Program Harvests Bananas With Customers in Mind

NFH_1923Strategic, reliable logistics processes are an important measure when providing the freshest produce from seedling to retail display. At Organics Unlimited, the harvesting of our organic bananas is done only after an order is placed, ensuring the freshest produce with the lowest carbon footprint. This begins with our process of growing and harvesting bananas without the use of chemical pesticides and through sustainable measures to ensure a healthy environment. Once a distributor or retailer places an order, our organic bananas are washed, packed and sent to the U.S.

During shipment, our organic bananas take a four-day road trip from Colima, Mexico to the U.S. in temperature-controlled trucks between 58 degrees and 64 degrees Fahrenheit with inspections taking place every eight to 10 hours. The relative air humidity is also maintained at exactly 85 percent. If the temperatures drop too low, the bananas will suffer from chill damage, resulting in a brown rather than yellow color upon ripening. If the bananas get too hot, they will not become firm. Keeping the truck’s climate in precise temperature and humidity specifications ensures that the organic bananas arrive to distributors in pristine condition.

Once the organic bananas are picked up by distributors, they are guided to follow the same procedures and begin undergoing the ripening process. Once ripened to the appropriate level and color, the organic bananas are at their freshest and ready for retail display.
