Sustainable in all Areas

Organics Unlimited Banana Plantation

At Organics Unlimited, we pride ourselves on being a company that promotes sustainability by not only caring for our communities but also by our stewardship of the environment. More and more, people want to know where their food comes from and how it is cultivated, but even more, people want to know that growers are practicing sustainability in all areas. A study conducted by Unilever was undertaken in five countries to determine the percentage of people who would switch brands if sustainability was a brand choice. They found that 21% of respondents would “actively choose brands if they made their sustainability credentials clearer on their packaging and in their marketing.” Unilever calculated that this creates an unclaimed market of upwards of $1.03 trillion. Moreover, 78% of American consumers claimed that “they feel better when they buy products that are sustainably produced.”

One of the areas that is getting much attention is the packaging used in food products. In 2009, the EPA released a report titled ‘Opportunities to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Materials and Land Management Practices.’ Though the increase in harmful Greenhouse Gas emissions isn’t breaking news, it was found that a staggering 42% of emissions from the United States alone are “associated with the energy used to produce, process, transport, and dispose of the food we eat and the goods we use.”

At Organics Unlimited, we never wrap our individual banana bunches in plastic bags. Our fresh, organic bananas are shipped in recyclable cardboard boxes that have been eye-catchingly designed to also serve as a point of purchase prop. At retail, our bananas feature a sticker and a narrow band of tape. And because our organic bananas are grown in Mexico, our transportation routes are short, further downsizing our carbon footprint.

There’s a huge buzz about eco-consciousness, and practicing sustainability can help attract new customers and build loyalty with existing ones. At Organics Unlimited, we are proud that our customers can count on us for sustainability.

Aflatoun in Ecuador

kidsThis week, we would like to highlight the Aflatoun program sponsored by GROW by Organics Unlimited. Aflatoun is a program that helps boys, girls and youth in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

This past year, thanks to the involvement of youth and adult volunteers and mothers, the program was able to form clubs where children were coached on key life-skill elements. These included self-awareness and rights, savings, planning and entrepreneurship.

Over 589 volunteers made this possible and were able to help over 6,200 boys and girls! While these numbers are impressive, they are so much more than just numbers. They represent the verifiable results that prove that the program contributed to improve life skills in children and youth, and that it increased their social responsibility within their communities. Through this program, children even in their early ages were taught to practice the concept of savings, thereby starting them on the road to financial success. Through the rights and responsibilities classes, children and youth were also taught that they are unique persons with rights and responsibilities, thereby preparing them to make good decisions in the future and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Through programs like Aflatoun, GROW by Organics Unlimited strives to increase the quality of life in these communities.
