GROW Promotes Healthy Smiles in Ecuador

dental2At Organics Unlimited, growing fresh organic bananas is what we do every day, but it is not the only thing we focus on. Equally important as our commitment to our fruit is our commitment to the land and to our community.

GROW by Organics Unlimited helps communities around our banana growing areas with funds raised from the purchase of every GROW banana. One of these regions is Guayaquil, a port city on the coast of Ecuador, and one of the ways that GROW helps the community is through dental care.

This past year (2017) we were able to provide dental sealants to over 3,800 boys and girls between the ages of 7-12. Sealants are very important as they provide protection against cavities and other oral health issues. The use of sealants is even more effective than other techniques as it is able to fill the small holes which provoke tooth fissures and pits. Thanks to the layer formed by the sealant, bacteria is prevented from entering  the zone.

Dental care in developing countries can be difficult to come by in rural areas. The dental program sponsored by GROW has allowed us to be successful in promoting oral health by engaging in personalized conversations between the dentist and each sponsored child. We emphasize the importance of oral care and hygine as well as provide dental services.

Thanks to the dental program funded by your purchase of GROW bananas, children in our communities can have access to healthy futures and bright smiles.

Merchandising for Spring

With spring just around the corner, more people are starting to think about outdoor activities, summer fun and getting healthier and more active. This makes it the perfect time to consider driving sales in the produce department through unique merchandising opportunities beyond the usual tips and tricks. Fresh organic bananas from Organics Unlimited are the perfect summer snack and here are some ways to let your customers know!

  • Make sure in-store displays are being cross-marketed with some of the other outdoor food items. Think of fruit salads with bananas, strawberries and other tropical fruits.

  • Consider hosting in-store events or partnering with community events to promote bananas. Some ideas are:

    • Host a healthy banana cooking class for adults and children. The internet is full of interesting and easy banana snack projects that are fun to make!

    • Host a mini farmer’s market right outside your store and display a tower of bananas that will attract customers.

    • Participate in local runs or other fitness events where bananas will benefit the athletes.

    • Print and display banana nutrition facts at your in-store displays. Bananas are the perfect pre and post workout snack and have a myriad of health benefits including boosting energy and contributing to muscle recuperation!

Organics Unlimited bananas make for a great on-the-go snack that is light, fresh and healthy. Due to their “just in time” method, Organics Unlimited harvests bananas at the time of order, making them the freshest bananas on the market. We are sure your customers will love incorporating our bananas into their spring and summer activities.

Banana Shortage Worldwide

leaf rain

Winter is still here and while many places are getting hit with cold weather, others are struggling with torrential rains. This of course has an impact on the food we eat, particularly produce. Colima, Mexico, where Organics Unlimited grows most of its organic bananas, is experiencing extremely cold temperatures. Normally, this would be mitigated by the organic bananas that Organics Unlimited grows in Ecuador, as these farms serve to supplement supply during winter months. Unfortunately, Ecuador is getting hit with very heavy rains.

This means that currently there is a worldwide shortage of bananas. It also means that the bananas making it to market may be a bit “blemished” on the outside.

But, there is good news! Although we cannot control the weather, Organics Unlimited is committed to doing everything possible to ensure that fulfillment of banana orders are timely. As for the slight blemishes some bananas may have? Let your customers know that that they are still the fresh, delicious organic bananas you know and love on the inside!

Mayra Velazquez de León, president and CEO of Organics Unlimited has issued the following letter:
Jan. 23th, 2018

Dear Customer,

As you all may be aware of, there is a shortage of bananas worldwide.

In Mexico we have been experiencing very cold weather which is halting the growth of the fruit.

Central and South America are getting hit with heavy rain, which is flooding the farms and making it hard to harvest.

All of this is causing delays in harvesting and filling orders, causing delays in shipments, therefore making banana supply very tight.

We appreciate your business, and rest assure that we are doing our best to fill your orders on a timely basis.

Please work with us during this situation.

We expect to have a better supply by the end of May.

Again, thank you for your business.

Sincerely,

Mayra Velazquez de Leon
