We all know that fruits and vegetables are a key component to a healthy diet, and now we have more research that shows why produce is so important.

A new study in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry demonstrates new understanding of how bananas make and store carotenoids, a compound found at various levels within bananas. Carotenoids are important vitamin precursors for eye health because they are converted to vitamin A in the liver, which promotes good eyesight. These findings could help scientists develop banana varieties that have higher amounts of carotenoids, leading to enhanced health benefits for consumers. Read more

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) opened a public comment period on November 12 for those seeking to share their thoughts on the regulation of the word “natural” on food labels. This action came as a result of a series of petitions to the FDA prompted more insight into the term. The Packer states that three petitions asked FDA to define the term “natural” and one asked that the term be prohibited on food labels. Read more
