For many in the United States, this week is a particularly stressful one. Wednesday, April 15 was Tax Day, and some procrastinators may have been down to the wire on filing (or may have asked for an extension). Whether your source of stress this week is looming taxes or another cause, the majority of Americans could use a bit more relaxation in their lives.

Which brings us to the topic of bananas. Most consumers are aware that there’s a high amount of potassium found in bananas, and potassium helps prevent muscle cramps. However, you can educate your customers that potassium is also an agent in stress relief. Potassium aids in the regulation of blood pressure, and this fruit actually has one of the highest potassium counts of all fruits and vegetables.

Bananas contain a plethora of other vitamins and minerals that promote relaxation and stress-relief as well. Melatonin is a hormone that promotes sleep, and bananas are one of the only foods it’s naturally found in. Like turkey, bananas contain tryptophan, which converts into serotonin, and we all know the serotonin-induced sleepy haze you feel after Thanksgiving dinner. What’s more, magnesium is known to relax muscles, and vitamin B6 helps promote sleep. They’re also found in bananas.

In addition to stress relief benefits, bananas can also relieve heartburn and keep your blood sugar levels regulated. Bananas are certainly a super fruit.

Experts say that two bananas a day can help naturally reduce stress. Pairing the proper foods with other natural remedies, such as plenty of water, regular exercise and calming techniques such as yoga and a good night’s rest can aid in long-term stress management.

April is recognized as National Stress Awareness Month by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and tax season has just passed, making it a great time to promote products – like organic bananas – that aid in stress relief. Consider creating a point-of-purchase display near your Organics Unlimited bananas to share the stress-relief properties of the fruit. Stress awareness month may also offer an opportunity to cross-promote by creating a display of products such as bananas, vitamins and calming teas that offer stress relief benefits. Or consider offering a stress management workshop or partnering with a local yoga studio to teach meditation and calming practices. With some creativity, you can use the nutritional information above along with these resources from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to create an educational opportunity for customers while they’re purchasing organic bananas in your store.
