Project Amigo Celebrates their Christmas Fiesta

Christmas Fiesta 2013 Pinata

As GROW, the non-profit label of Organics Unlimited, continues to flourish, the more opportunities the workers and families in the banana growing regions of Mexico and Ecuador gain. One of the wonderful places our funds go to is Project Amigo, a non-profit organization that helps poor children of Colima, Mexico achieve their highest potential by providing programs that motivate them to stay in school and improve their access to higher education. This month was their annual Christmas Fiesta.

Every year Project Amigo and the Colima Rotary Club host a Christmas party for more than 250 disadvantaged children. During the week before the party, volunteers sort, wrap, and label gifts of new clothing, shoes, and toys, then distribute them to the children. The climax of the week is the Fiesta itself, during which volunteers serve food, play with the children, and bring Christmas joy to hundreds of little ones. The week also gives visitors the opportunity to experience the Mexican Festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

This year’s Fiesta week saw 12 work week volunteers and 25 Project Amigo scholars (grades 10 through college) fitting about 270 children (grades kindergarten thru 6th grade) with a new pair of shoes, pants, and a shirt/blouse. The children also received new underwear and socks, a book, and a small bag of toys. Of course the big Christmas Fiesta and posole meal for 200 of them (for the kids older than kindergarten) was a huge success yet again. (See pictures below)
