Organics Unlimited Helps Organically Grown Company Celebrate $1 Million Donation Milestone to the GROW Fund

GROW scholars Thank YouNorthwest-based organic distributor of GROW by Organics Unlimited, Organically Grown Company (OGC), recently reached an impressive milestone, announcing the donation of $1 million to the GROW program through 10 years of sales. OGC committed to purchasing its organic bananas exclusively from GROW beginning in 2005 when the brand was first introduced by Organics Unlimited. Together, with the cooperation of its retail customers, the company celebrates this philanthropic achievement.

The list of grocery retailers to which OGC supplies GROW organic bananas is lengthy, but some of the companies that have been supporting GROW along with the distributor since 2005 include PCC Natural Markets, New Seasons Market, Town & Country stores, Market of Choice stores, Sundance Natural Foods and The Food Co-Op in Port Townsend.

In 10 years of giving, retailers have helped OGC achieve this accomplishment. “Sometimes it takes a big milestone to be able to step back and fully comprehend the impact that can be made by working together,” said Tonya Haworth, marketing communications specialist for Organically Grown Company.

Each OGC retail customer that supports GROW commits to paying a small surcharge of $.60 per box of organic bananas without increasing the cost of the fruit to the consumer. Little by little over time, these small donations have accumulated into something truly remarkable.

About a year ago, OGC realized it was going to hit $1 million in donations to the GROW program and reached out to Organics Unlimited. Mayra Velazquez de Leon, president of Organics Unlimited and GROW, will visit the Pacific Northwest in June to give a presentation at three different locations to OGC and its retailers. She will also thank OGC with several hosted employee trips to Colima for a Project Amigo Work Week, as she has done in years past.

A Work Week allows members of the OGC team to see the impact their donations have had. Throughout the week, visitors volunteer on school-based literacy projects, teaching English as a Second Language, enrichment programs for children and other activities.

As OGC and its customers have supported the GROW fund since its inception, more and more employees at the different companies have become engaged with the brand, attending volunteer weeks and seeing the positive impact their donations have had on the communities surrounding Organics Unlimited’s banana farms.

We look forward to continuing to strengthen the relationship among Organics Unlimited, OGC, retail customers and Project Amigo for years to come.
