Buy a Banana. Change a Life: GROW Ecuador

Safe Water Project

Building the communities where you do business provides a connection for your store that goes way beyond revenues and bottom line.  It is the backbone of why many employees come to work every day and why many customers choose to shop with you.

Organics Unlimited started GROW in 2005. The emphasis at the beginning was to connect with the communities where our bananas are grown in Mexico.  We wanted to give you and your customers a way to also help the impoverished in this region. But by 2010, as our sourcing of bananas expanded to Ecuador, we recognized the need in that country as well.

GROW Ecuador works with a variety of programs, filling the needs in the banana growing areas.  The following are some of the ways your GROW funds have been used in Ecuador in the past three years: GROW label

Our initial project in 2010 provided help for young people in starting micro-businesses in and around Guayaquil. They learned the fundamentals of making these small business successful and gained confidence in their abilities to step into the world.

  • In 2012, GROW Ecuador expanded to include an Early Childhood Education Project. Early childhood education is defined by UNESCO as a service that contributes to the survival, growth, development and learning potential of children from birth through the early years of school.  GROW funding for this project provides for a teacher and the training of 70 volunteers to support the program. It directly benefits 315 children ages 3 and 4 for a complete year. This is a program run by Children International (, a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to bettering the lives of impoverished children, their families and communities.
  • In 2012, GROW Ecuador also embarked on a Safe Water Project.  69% of families in the area do not follow appropriate practices for the maintenance of drinking or cooking water.  This program was designed to educate families on the protection and cleansing of water containers, water disinfection and proper water storage. GROW funds pay for a professional educator for training sessions and home visits that benefit 400 families, impacting approximately 1500 people.  Participating families also receive 20-liter drinking water containers for use in their homes. This is also a program of Children International.
