In 2013, President Obama proclaimed May as National Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health is a critical part of overall health and wellness. Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is important for your body on a cellular level. It’s necessary for energy metabolism and making chemicals within cells called neurotransmitters, which helps brain function. This vitamin also helps the body produce serotonin. A study from Tufts University in Boston found that men with higher concentrations of B6 performed better on memory tests than those with lower levels of B6. One banana contains .5 milligrams of Vitamin B-6, which is about 40 percent of what is recommended per day.

Vitamin C
This nutrient helps protect blood vessels in your brain from oxidative damage. Vitamin C is also needed to create a specific neurotransmitter that allows for communications in your between neurons in your brain. A banana contains a whopping 33 percent of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C.

Magnesium
When mixed with water, minerals such as magnesium become electrolytes, which are important for your brain in order for it to maintain its electrical activity. Additionally, magnesium produces an enzyme that allows ammonia, a byproduct of metabolism, to convert to urea and be disposed b the body. Even the smallest trace of ammonia in the brain can cause disruptions in your focus and ability to pay attention, so magnesium is a critical mineral. A banana contains 37 milligrams of magnesium, about 15 percent of what you need daily.

Tryptophan
This amino acid is used in the production of serotonin and dopamine, which are mood regulators. It will help you stay calm and focused while lessening anxiety and stress. One banana provides more than half the daily needed amount of tryptophan.

Natural Sugars
Like all fruits, bananas contain a certain amount of sugar, something we all need in moderation. The fiber content in a banana helps regulate how quickly that the sugar is broken down by our bodies, which aids in providing a steady flow of sugar into your bloodstream, giving you constant energy throughout the day and helping your brain function. The ideal amount of glucose we want in our bloodstream is the roughly the amount of sugar found in a banana.
