At Organics Unlimited, our reputation is based on the high quality organic bananas that we sell to markets in the U.S., Canada and Asia. Ripening
Bananas ripen best off the plant. To guarantee the best quality, our wholesale distributor customers maintain ripening rooms where bananas are ripened prior to being shipped to their retail grocery customers.
Bananas are ripened by using ethylene gas, a substance naturally produced by fruits that accelerates the normal process of fruit maturation. Ripening programs usually run from 4 to 8 days. The color of the peel is used as an indicator of ripening progression. Most ripening facilities take fruit out of the ripening rooms and ship to retailers at color stage 3.5.
