2015 Year in Review

Organics Unlimited Staff Christmas Party 2015

As the year draws to a close, we looked back at 2015 and found that Organics Unlimited and GROW had quite a few memorable moments over the last 12 months.

The year began with Organics Unlimited celebrating its 15th year of business as well as being named one of San Diego’s Most Admired Companies by San Diego Metro Magazine.

In February, produce companies nationwide faced a challenge during the West Coast port dispute. Dozens of cargo ships were anchored just off the coasts of Los Angeles and Long Beach, waiting their turn to be unloaded while their perishable goods spoiled. Thankfully, Organics Unlimited ships the majority of its fruit by truck from Mexico to San Diego, so our logistics chain was less compromised than others and we lost less product.

Organics Unlimited aims for continued quality, sustainability and growth. To answer these commitments and keep increasing our product yield, Organics Unlimited hired a new engineer in 2015 to help oversee the growing and production processes.

GROW celebrated a milestone year in 2015, noting a decade of giving back to Mexican and Ecuadorian communities through the program. More than $2 million in aid (and counting!) has been donated thanks to your continued purchases of GROW organic bananas. GROW marked its 10th anniversary with a new, limited-edition label and a special initiative in September called GROW Month.

Organic Odes, the blog for Organics Unlimited and GROW, saw more visitors and more page views than any other year. Readers from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, U.K., Brazil, Italy and more logged on to read updates on our organic produce, learn more about our nonprofit initiatives and more. Top blog posts were:

GROW and Project Amigo Celebrate the Christmas Fiesta

GROW Bananas Project Amigo Christmas Fiesta

Organics Unlimited believes in helping advance the well-being of the families living in their communities. A portion of the proceeds from every GROW organic banana purchased gets re-invested into the communities surrounding the Organics Unlimited farms in Mexico and Ecuador. Through supporting nonprofit organizations such as Project Amigo in Mexico, GROW funds are used to run educational programs, provide dental and medical care and more.

Every holiday, Project Amigo hosts a very special Christmas Fiesta for local elementary-aged children in the Colima area. This Fiesta is a traditional holiday celebration in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico. As GROW scholarship recipients are required to contribute a certain amount of community service hours every month, they do much of the work in preparing the celebration. (more…)

Consider Using Grab ‘n’ Go Tactics to Market to Men

Marketing Produce to Men

A recent piece by James Prevor in Produce Business discusses, in part, how the industry can sell more produce and achieve our collective goal of making the 5 a Day campaign a success. While the piece focused on selling more produce within convenience stores, there are lessons that grocers can take from the opinion editorial as well. (more…)
