How GROW Benefits Quality of Life in Ecuador

GROW EcudadorAs GROW celebrates a milestone of 10 years of giving back to communities in Mexico and Ecuador, we want to share information on how funds raised from GROW organic banana sales are distributed and used. Through Children International, with the help of the International Community Foundation to manage and distribute funds, GROW organic banana purchases aid communities within Ecuador.

The full name of the organization in Ecuador is called Fundacion Niñez Internacional-Afiliada a Children International. This affiliate program is a nonprofit humanitarian organization dedicated to bettering the lives of impoverished children, their families and communities. Specifically, GROW funds have helped establish a clean water program, as well as an early childhood education tutoring program in Guayaquil, aimed to help young students with their studies.

In Guayaquil, GROW funds help fund a tutoring program to provide academic reinforcement for sponsored children or kids from the community that are at risk of dropping out of school or failing. These children are in pre-school through sixth grade. Tutoring sessions are carried out by high school or university students ages 15-19 who have high GPAs. The children attend two group tutoring sessions per week and these are held at are five community centers along with mothers’ homes.

“I am very happy because I belong to a tutoring program group,” said Melany, a student. “I have met many friends and I am learning to listen and pay attention to what my teacher says. We play and read stories. We practice a lot of reading and math.”

In 2015 to date, there are 589 children that have participated in the tutoring program in Guayaquil. Interim reports are provided to Vickie Wiedemann, vice president of Children International, who provides them to ICF and supporters such as GROW. This serves as a way to ensure GROW funds are being used wisely in communities near our banana farms in Ecuador.

Each GROW purchase makes a difference to the people of these communities in Ecuador, so we thank you for your continued support. You can learn more about Children International’s work in Ecuador or sponsor a child directly through Children International.
