PEOPLE WE'VE HELPED
Javier Ferrel Almanza

Javier Ferrel Almanza’s parents work in the fields in Mexico growing bananas.  While they were never educated, they understood that it was important for Javier to follow his studies.  But there was no money to pay for secondary school.  And for Javier, there was no one to ask for help when he didn’t understand his assignments.

During summer vacation of 2009, Javier’s teacher recommended him for a GROW scholarship.  Through the support of GROW, Javier has the supplies he needs for school, help from tutors, access to computers, and a new focus for his life.  He is working hard to become educated so that he will have opportunities in life to go beyond field work.  His dream is to be a lawyer and defend the rights of others.  But right now, he is already giving back to his community through the work he does as a GROW scholar.  He is focused on service to the community, including keeping the schools, streets and the sports fields clean, participating in charity events  and working in GROW sponsored vision clinics.
