Patricia Aguirre and Carlos Gabriel Gallardo are excelling in school in Cerro de Ortega because of the help they are getting through a GROW funded homework club. At home, their parents can barely read and write, the only place to do home work is on their beds, and there is little space with many constant distractions.
Homework clubs meet weekly. They provide a meeting place with good lighting, seating, and a quiet environment conducive to concentrating on school work. During their weekly meetings, Patricia and Carlos have a chance to read aloud and discuss what they are reading. They learn together and have a raised confidence in expressing themselves.
The homework club that Patricia and Carlos attend was founded in 2005 and is run by Project Amigo, a local social services group, through funds from GROW. Programs like this help the future of this area through educating the children of the farm workers.
